GOP Platform Mentions Abstinence, Unplanned Pregnancies-"Lost amid the news about Bristol Palin’s out-of-wedlock pregnancy, Republicans unanimously passed their 2008 party platform on Monday.....It also specifically mentions “women struggling with the challenges of an unplanned pregnancy.”....In a section called “Preserving Our Values,” the platform reads: We all have a moral obligation to assist, not to penalize, women struggling with the challenges of an unplanned pregnancy. At its core, abortion is a fundamental assault on the sanctity of innocent human life. Women deserve better than abortion. Every effort should be made to work with women considering abortion to enable and empower them to choose life. We salute those who provide them alternatives, including pregnancy care centers, and we take pride in the tremendous increase in adoptions that has followed Republican legislative initiatives....The platform also embraces abstinence education as a replacement for sex-ed programs: We renew our call for replacing “family planning” programs for teens with increased funding for abstinence education, which teaches abstinence until marriage as the responsible and expected standard of behavior. Abstinence from sexual activity is the only protection that is 100 percent effective against out-of-wedlock pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/AIDS when transmitted sexually. We oppose school-based clinics that provide referrals, counseling, and related services for abortion and contraception. Schools should not ask children to answer offensive or intrusive personal nonacademic questionnaires without parental consent. 2008 GOP Platform Eliminates ‘Commitment’ to U.N.-"Both critics and supporters of the United Nations have found applause-worthy features in the Republican Party platform adopted at this week’s convention. But while those on both sides of the issue see the document as heralding a shift in direction, its treatment of the U.N. in fact differs little from the GOP’s 2004 platform. The new document says the U.S. “will pay a fair, but not disproportionate, share of dues” to the U.N., and “will never support a U.N.-imposed tax.”...“While tough, [it] is far from an anti-U.N. screed,” U.N. Dispatch poster Mark Goldberg wrote Tuesday. “In fact, parts of it are an outright rejection of far right’s preferred approach to the United Nations.”...The Democratic document also pledges to reinstate federal funding to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). The Republican administration has defunded the agency since 2002, citing alleged links to China’s coercive population control policies."

Leslie Unruh, who chairs the Vote Yes for Life project, is familiar with Planned Parenthood (PP). Much of PP’s money will come from out-of-state sources, she says.
