The Gill Effect: Why the Iowa Legislature Won’t Vote for Biblical Marriage?

Monday, 13 April 2009 21:25

The collision course of religious liberty with the proponents of sexual anarchy was dramatically illustrated last week in, of all places, Iowa. Two weeks ago, the Supreme Court of Iowa suddenly discovered the right to sodomy buried in the shadows of their constitution. This misguided decision made Iowa the third state to legalize homosexual unions. This is very shocking coming out of the heartland of America. But what followed was even more pathetic.

Why didn’t the legislature respond?

The state of Iowa does not allow for a citizen’s ballot like some other states. When the California Supreme Court overstepped its bounds in regards to marriage and legalized homosexual marriage, the people rose up and qualified a ballot proposition and voted to reverse the court.

This option is not available in Iowa. The legislature first has to pass a proposed constitutional amendment in two consecutive sessions of the legislature. Then it can be put before the people for a vote.

Last week CADC and other pro-family groups deluged the Democratic majority leader Kevin McCarthy of the Iowa legislature to allow for a vote on marriage before the end of this legislative session. This would be the first step towards putting it before the people for a vote. The polls show that Iowa overwhelmingly supports traditional marriage. Although they were swamped with calls and even had protests in the capitol, the majority leader would not budge.

Why No Vote? Follow the money!

Iowa was one of 13 state legislatures targeted by the deep pockets of homosexual activist and multimillionaire Tim Gill. Gill has made it his goal to advance his homosexual agenda by targeting state legislatures that are vulnerable to a takeover.

Gill does this by strategically making examples of conservative, pro-family legislators, like six term Iowa legislator, Danny Carrol. He was targeted because he dared to sponsor a bill to amend the Iowa Constitution to define marriage as a union of one man and one woman.

Even though the overwhelming majority of Iowan’s oppose homosexual marriage, the fear of Gill makes cowards of unprincipled legislators who are afraid to do the right thing for the sake of their constituents.

How Gill Works

Because Iowa is not a hot bed of homosexuals, Gill had his queer allies from across the US send in lots of small donations to his targets’ opponents. These small gifts would not raise much suspicion. At the last minute, just before the vote and after the last public financial disclosure deadline, Gill would spend thousands of dollars against his intended target.

In a state legislative race a few thousand dollars can make a big difference. Danny Carroll didn’t even know why he lost until an Atlantic Monthly reporter pointed him to all the out of state checks.

Show me the money?

In the 2006 elections, Gill and his allies gave more than $3 million to various state campaigns. In some cases, these contributions amounted to more than 20 percent of a politician’s budget. The payoff was that fifty of the seventy targeted candidates were defeated.

The control of at least one legislative chamber switched to the Democratic Party in four states Gill targeted, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Washington and, you guessed it, Iowa. So while the God-fearing people of Iowa minded their faith, families and farms, one man, a homosexual recluse from Colorado, took away their legislature.

Tim Gill is cunning, but what he has done is not illegal. Christians need to pay very close attention to who they support and only support those who stand for biblical marriage."
