Nurse Suspended in India After legal Abortion Kills Woman, Investigation Started
Varanasi, India (LifeNews.com) -- A health visitor (registered nurse) in India has been suspended and local officials have launched an investigation after an abortion killed a woman who was three months pregnant.
The abortion death points to the very real consequences of legal abortions for women and shows that attempts by abortion advocates to allow nurses to do abortions puts women's health at risk.
The abortion was done on a woman at the Araziline CHC on Wednesday, according to the Times of India, and the health visitor who reportedly did the abortion has been suspended.
Local police have indicated they have filed complaints against the nurse under two sections of criminal code after Mahendra Bind, the husband of the deceased woman, Rajkumari Bind, filed a complaint.
The newspaper indicates a nurse doing an abortion at a medical center violates the nation's termination of pregnancy (MTP) Act and the district health administration is looking into the case.
"The health visitor, Rajkumari Maurya, has been suspended and a probe in the matter has been ordered," chief medical officer RS Verma told the Times of India today. Verma confirmed a probe would be launched into the circumstances surrounding the abortion.
Verma also informed the newspaper that it appears the nurse did the abortion without getting two physicians to sign off on it, as its required under India's abortion laws.
Officials could also bring charges against the staff and administration of the Araziline CHC medical clinic.
"Action could be initiated only after the final report of investigation comes," he said.
The law prohibits abortions beyond 20 weeks into pregnancy unless the mother's life is at risk from it.
This new case is at least the second in India this year of a woman dying from a legal abortion.
Another woman died in April in Hyderabad, who was identified as 22-year-old S Sneha. She died at Care Hospital after developing complications during the abortion. http://www.lifenews.com/int1166.html
Humayunnagar police sub-inspector Fayaz told the newspaper, “Sneha was six weeks pregnant. On the night of April 8, Gautam, his sister Jyothsna and brother-in-law Ramesh, took Sneha to the Karan Maternity Hospital at Vijaynagar colony to get an abortion done. Jyothsna and Ramesh are also doctors."
