Mr. President, With all the Crises, Where's the Call to Prayer?

Editorial by John-Henry Westen

June 28, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) - It would seem that with the devastating, still unresolved Gulf oil spill crisis, the real possibility of Western military defeat in Afghanistan, the powderkeg situation in the Middle East, and the World economic crisis, the President of the United States would urge Americans to special prayer for the protection of America and for peace and stability in the world. So far, unlike many of his predecessors, and especially unlike his immediate predecessor, President Obama has not indicated he sees any value in appealing to God for special help regarding these dangers.

But we must remember that the current President did say in April 2009 "we do not consider ourselves a Christian nation," despite the nation's overwhelming Christian heritage and the fact that 62% of Americans still consider the nation to be Christian.

Former President George W. Bush, despite his flaws, called the nation to prayer after 9-11, during the aftermath of the Hurricane Katrina devastation, after the explosion of the space shuttle Columbia and on many other occasions. These emergency calls to prayer were over and above the annual "National Day of Prayer" officially instituted in 1952. But even on that day President Bush outstripped his successor.

During the Bush years, in addition to the annual proclamation of the National Day of Prayer, Bush held a White House observance in the East Room. Obama cancelled the White House East Room observance as did Democratic President Bill Clinton before him.

Shirley Dobson, the esteemed chair of the National Day of Prayer task force responded to Obama's snub saying: "We are disappointed in the lack of participation by the Obama Administration. At this time in our country's history, we would hope our President would recognize more fully the importance of prayer."

President Obama has however instituted a different East Room White House observance. He invited the leadership of the homosexual lobby to celebrate the "birthday" of the gay-activist movement.

It is also important to note that the unelected courts are also trying to stop Presidential calls to prayer. In an April 2010 decision U.S. District Judge Barbara B. Crabb declared the National Day of Prayer unconstitutional.

The United States is seemingly being brought to its knees by the building series of ominous events endangering its security and stability. Many are getting the feeling that there is an unmistakable message in these calamities - either America turns back to honoring the ways of God and appeals for His intercession, as was always done in the past, or these dangers will continue to grow and engulf the nation - no matter how great the human resources we throw at the crises.

President Bush and many past presidents understood the obligation to at times urge the entire nation to special, urgent prayer. Now the question is - will President Obama and many of the nation's religious leaders also come to understand and sufficiently act on that obligation, in time to prevent catastrophe? We must pray that they will.
