Taxman was the first song on the album Revolver in 1966. One of the first songs written by George Harrison. The references in the song are clear references to Wilson and Heath who were the leaders of the Labour Party and Conservative Party in the UK at the time. The references to "there's one for you, Nineteen for me" was no joke. The leader of the Labour Party introduced a supertax of 95% on the highest tax bracket. Lyrics are below video so as the song begins to play in The Beatles cartoon below you can follow along.
George Harrison said, "Taxman' was when I first realised that even though we had started earning money, we were actually giving most of it away in taxes. It was and still is typical."
Paul McCartney said, "George wrote that and I played guitar on it. He wrote it in anger at finding out what the taxman did. He had never known before then what he'll do with your money."-Source for everything above was Wikipedia. I typically shy away from quoting from wikipedia cause of its liberal slant on many issues but on this one I thought it was ok.
Here are the lyrics
Let me tell you
How it will be.
There's one for you,
Nineteen for me,
'Cause I'm the taxman.
Yeah, I'm the taxman.
Should five percent
Appear too small,
Be thankful I don't
Take it all.
'Cause I'm the taxman.
Yeah, I'm the taxman.
If you drive a car,
I'll tax the street.
If you drive to city,
I'll tax your seat.
If you get too cold,
I'll tax the heat.
If you take a walk,
I'll tax your feet.
Taxman!
'Cause I'm the taxman.
Yeah, I'm the taxman.
Don't ask me what I want it for,
(Uh-uh, Mr. Wilson.)
If you don't want to pay some more.
(Uh-uh, Mr. Heath.)
'Cause I'm the taxman.
Yeah, I'm the taxman.
And my advice to
Those who die.
(Taxman!)
Declare the pennies
On your eyes.
(Taxman!)
'Cause I'm the taxman.
Yeah, I'm the taxman,
And you're working for no one but me.
(Taxman!)
Here is another video in the same train of thought if you will with 3.6 million You Tube hits..
Here is Christine O'Donnell's recent ad in Delaware for the Senate seat against her opponent.
But on a more spiritual level check out Relient K's video reminding us all that there is life after Death and Taxes. This video has only 249 hits but is a jewel.
